Barack Obama's Pastor, Jeremiah Wright, Already Damaging Obama :: Wake up America

Read this article on the community site

By now, according to Rasmussen, 66 percent of voters say they have read, seen, or heard news stories about Wright's comments.

For those reading this that haven't seen Obama's pastor of 20 years, and his "God Damn America" rant, it can be found at YouTube and is shown below:

Barack Obama has claimed he was never present during his Pastor's rants.

Back to the Rasmussen report, most voters, 56 percent, said Wright's comments made them less likely to vote for Obama. That figure includes 44 percent of Democrats. Just 11 percent of voters say they are more likely to vote for Obama because of Wright's comments.

The story became big news in the past several days and has had at least a temporary impact on public perceptions of Obama. Last Thursday, 52% of voters nationwide had a favorable opinion of Obama. That figure has fallen to 47% on Monday (see recent daily results). In recent days, Obama has also lost ground to John McCain in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll.

Tomorrow Barack Obama is planning to give a speech on "the larger issue of race in this campaign," he told reporters in Monaca, PA.

Worrisome for Obama supporters is that, although he is denouncing Wright's specific words in the clip, he is trying to defend the man himself by making comments like, "The caricature that's being painted of him is not accurate."

Nobody put those words in Jeremiah Wright's mouth. Nobody dubbed them in.

He said them and Barack Obama is losing ground in favorability already, in the short amount of time this story has been on fire in the media and blogosphere, and until he gets out in front of this and stops making excuses and stops trying to "explain" those comments of his pastor and simply distances himself as far and as fast as possible, those Rasmussen numbers and well as other polling organizations figures, are showing what the trend will be.

Downward.

An Arab Plea for Democracy :: Freedom's Cost

Read this article on the community site

The Arab Times from Kuwait had the following opinion:

We need to think democratically to believe in its values

It has taken democratic societies in the West centuries of struggle to accept, and perhaps to "internalize," to some extent, certain democratic values. For example, since the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215, when a group of Barons forced King John of England to agree to a charter of liberties, Britain went through other historical events to reach its current conception of the democratic system. In fact, it has taken the "Britons" two civil wars, a beheading of one king and a dethroning of another during the seventeenth century to achieve constitutional monarchy and democratic governing at the beginning of the eighteenth century.

However, most of the historical processes usually involved in internalizing democratic values in society tend to be associated with the ordinary individuals' effort. They, the ordinary individuals, who needed to internalize the importance of democratic values and give them subjective characters by considering them as important parts of their individual and social consciousness. In other words, it is until the "individual" in any society aspires and then embraces democratic values on the personal level, one can really talk about democracy as a guiding principle of this or that society.

In our Middle Eastern region, "democratic values" do not seem to have reached that level of historical development in which most ordinary members of any typical Middle Eastern society can consider as their guiding moral principles in their daily life. Whether on the personal, familial and social level, freedom of expression, human rights and the importance of accepting differing points of views as characteristics of any democratic environment, do not seem to have internalized yet. It may not need a series of revolutions to establish real democracy in the Middle East; however, democratizing our region should begin from the bottom upward. One needs to develop the building blocks of any democratic environment so it can be established on solid grounds. Individuals in the Middle East, to a greater extent, are still influenced and perhaps guided by already entrenched historical, moral and cultural principals that apparently do not correspond to any kind of healthy democratic living.

It is until we as MiddleEastern individuals start realizing the historical predicament we are in, and it is until we can understand how our lack of democratic participation, for example, is robbing us from many opportunities to live a healthy and balanced life, that one can hope that democracy will find supporters amongst us! We, as individuals who are part of this historical region need to think "democratically" first if we wish to believe in democratic values and use them in our daily life.

Arriving at democracy is a slow and ofttimes painful, but there must be a will and an incentive to start that process. Democracy is far from perfect and there will always be those elements who'll figure out just how to take advantage of it for their own selfish ends. To quote Winston Churchill, "Democracy is a terrible system, but it's the best we got!"

Until the world is mostly democratic there will always be threats of some political ogre arising to subdue his neighboring countries and eventually the rest of the free world. The best defense the West has against being taken over is by fostering the ideas of democracy not just in the West, but by nurturing the fledgling movements that are starting to be heard within the Islamic world proposing a democratization of government, more rights and equality for all. It may not seem financially wise in the short run to defy those entrenched in power within the Islamic world. However, a dispassioned look at oil politics, will convince anyone who cares to keep to use one's analytic mind and eyes open that the oil potentates and assorted despots need the Western money at least as much as the West needs oil.

To act upon such a premise takes courage, a lack of greed, the strength to envision and act on a better future. In the short run it may difficult to change the policy of bowing and kowtowing to those who control the oil. A safe future, a better world for our descendants demands it, however. Are there courageous individuals, are there any politicians who are strong and idealistic enough to fight for what is right, for a change? Or is every Western politician more interested in getting his/her pockets filled while the people's future is sold?

More Proof That The Palestinian Don't Want Peace :: Yid With Lid

Read this article on the community site

YID With LID

You can tell alot about a people by who they support. For example when Ehud Barak was Prime Minister of Israel the people grew tired of the constant terror attacks so public support moved to Ariel Sharon who was perceived as stronger on defense.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was originally elected because he was the hand picked successor of the terrorist Arafat. He talked a good game of peace but so did the pedophile he replaced.

The truth is the Palestinian people do not want peace--that's why ever since he was elected Abbas support has waned and moved to Hamas. Not that Fatah is any less radical than Hamas--Hamas is just more open about it.

Poll: Hamas Popularity On Rise Since Gaza Border Breach - AFP

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP)--The popularity of Hamas has risen in recent months since the Gaza Strip's border breach with Egypt, deadly Israeli strikes and the lack of progress in renewed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, according to an opinion poll released Monday.

"A major shift in Hamas's favor occurred during the last three months with about 10% of the population shifting their attitudes and perceptions," said the Palestinian Centre for Policy and Survey Research in a statement accompanying the results.

The same number of people would vote for moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as for senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in any presidential election and the Islamists would get more votes than Fatah in legislative polls, it said.

Abbas, who succeeded legendary leader Yasser Arafat at the head of the Palestinian Authority in January 2005, would receive 46% of votes, compared with 47% for Haniya.

It is the first poll in which an Islamist candidate has garnered more support than the secular leader.

Haniya served as prime minister in the Hamas-led unity government that Abbas fired in June 2007 after the Islamists routed his forces in the Gaza Strip following a week of deadly clashes.

The Hamas leader would not fare as well against Marwan Barghouti, the popular West Bank leader of Abbas's Fatah party and architect of the 2000 uprising who is imprisoned by Israel for his involvement in suicide attacks.

Barghuti would receive 57% of the vote, while Haniya would get 38%, the poll said.

In legislative elections, Hamas would receive 42% of the vote, compared with 35% for Fatah - a near mirror reversal of the figures from a December poll, in which 31% would have voted for Hamas and 49% for Fatah.

The rise in Hamas's popularity is partly due to the recent breach of Gaza's border with Egypt and the high number of Palestinian casualties in Israeli strikes on the coastal strip, the poll said.

Abbas meanwhile has been hurt by the lack of an improvement in Palestinians' daily lives amid the renewed peace talks with Israelis, it said.

"These developments managed to present Hamas as successful in breaking the siege (on Gaza) and as a victim of Israeli attacks," it said.

"These also presented Palestinian president Abbas and his Fatah faction as impotent, unable to change the bitter reality in the West Bank or ending Israeli occupation through diplomacy," it said.

Fifty-six per cent of those questioned said they were "unsatisfied" with Abbas, compared with 41% who said they were satisfied.

The survey questioned 1,270 people in the West Bank and Gaza between March 13 and 15 and had a three-percent margin of error.

Saudi Vice, episode 12: Flying sorcerors :: Elder of Ziyon

Read this article on the community site

It was a busy day for our heroes at the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice.

First, they managed to chase a young couple into the path of an oncoming truck.

But there was another, more nefarious evil happening, unbelievably, in the holy Kingdom itself:

Sorcery.

Two Yemenis and a Sudanese man were practicing the black arts in Dhamad, Jizan. They had books and formulas showing how to cast spells, ready to do the most horrible things to innocent Muslims who stumble across their paths.

Luckily, our heroes at the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice found out about these criminals and arrested them.

As the Saudi Gazette reports:

The three are charged with "malicious activities" to break up marriages and inflict harm on people for money. They reportedly slaughtered black sheep as part of their sorcery rituals.

And once the Muttawa were done with them, the three confessed to these heinous crimes.

The newspaper explains the crime of practicing "malicious magic":

As per Shariah law, Saudi Arabia prohibits sorcery. "Malicious magic" is perceived to have the power to influence the mind, body or possessions and cause disease, sickness in animals, bad luck, sudden death, impotence and other such misfortunes.

Truly, how fortunate the Saudi people are that they have people who put their own manhood at risk in order to save the rest of the Saudi males from magical impotence.

Another stellar day for our heroes, and now Saudi men can sleep better at night knowing that they are safe from black magic.

Lazer Brody brings us the inspirational story of Doron Mahareta, one of the 8 Yeshiva students murdered in cold blood over a week ago (hat tip: Israel Matzav).

One of the rabbis from Mercaz HaRav told me the most amazing story you'll ever hear about Doron's dedication to learning Torah, a story that competes with the Gemara's account of Hillel's near freezing on the roof of Shmaya and Avtalion's Yeshiva (see tractate Yoma, 35b).

Doron wanted to learn Torah in Mercaz HaRav, one of the best of Israel's yeshivas. But, since his early schooling was in Ethiopia, he lacked a strong background in Gemara. The Yeshiva rejected him. He wasn't discouraged. He asked, "If you won't let me learn Torah, will you let me wash the dishes in the mess hall?" For a year and a half, Doron washed dishes. But, he spent every spare minute in the study hall. He inquired what the yeshiva boys were learning, and spent most of the nights and all of his Shabbatot with his head in the Gemara learning what they learned. One day, the "dish washer" asked the Rosh Yeshiva to test him. The Rosh Yeshiva politely smiled and tried to gently dismiss Doron, but Doron wouldn't budge. He forced the Rosh Yeshiva into a Torah discussion; the next day, he was no longer a dish washer but a full-fledged "yeshiva bachur".

On weekends, when Doron would come home to visit his family in Ashdod, he'd spend the entire Shabbat either in the Melitzer Shul or the neighboring Gerrer shtiebel learning Shulchan Aruch and its commentaries. Three weeks ago, he finished the entire Shulchan Aruch and principle commentaries. Doron achieved in his tender 26 years what others don't attain in 88 years. He truly was an unblemished sacrifice, who gave his life for all of us.

This is the type of person people should try to emulate, instead of the likes of Paris Hilton and the usual bunch of knuckleheads that today's youth seem to adore.

The world is a worse place without Doron.

Saudi Vice, episode 11: Khulwa can be fatal :: Elder of Ziyon

Read this article on the community site

A young man and woman in Saudi Arabia decided to do the ultimate act of evil: to take a drive together in the man's Toyota Camry.

Of course, a man and woman being alone together - even in a car - is known as "khulwa" as can be punished with many lashes and a prison sentence.

Our heroes at the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice got tipped off about this flagrant violation of human decency and started to go after the criminals.

The suspects, knowing that the SUV coming after them had the distinctive style of our Muttawa heroes, decided to try to avoid being detained.

Saudi law states that the Muttawa should never engage in a car chase, but should call police to arrest the criminals. Our heroes, though, knew that the police were not as efficient nor as single-minded about stamping out serious crimes like these as the members of the Commission, and it is an insult to think that the Muttawa cannot chase cars as well as any police officer.

On the Madina-Tabuk Road, in the Tabuk area, the chase ended when the Camry rammed head-on into a truck and burst into flames.

The man's body was totally charred. The woman's body was ripped into two by the force of the impact. They were too disfigured for immediate identification.

But most importantly, our heroes managed to stop a flagrant act of khulwa, and, especially, any unspeakable acts that might have followed.

Another fine day for our heroes at the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice!

Ambassador Jones puts foot in mouth again :: FresnoZionism.org

Read this article on the community site

Ambassador Richard JonesThe US ambassador to Israel, Richard Jones, who once announced that Jonathan Pollard was lucky not to have been executed, has done it again.

On Monday during a tour of Mea Shearim, a haredi neighborhood bordering on Arab neighborhoods in east Jerusalem, US Ambassador to Israel Richard H. Jones told The Jerusalem Post that the US was "concerned about where things are built in Jerusalem."

Referring to the overcrowded haredi neighborhoods in Jerusalem, Jones said he was aware of the shortage of housing, but added: "Sometimes people do have to move to a different location. They cannot always stay close to their families." — Jerusalem Post

Jones apparently believes that all areas which were not part of Israel between 1948 and 1967 belong to the Palestinians.

This contradicts UN resolution 242 (as interpreted by those who wrote it), the view of the Israeli government, and President Bush's letter to PM Sharon of April 2004. All of these agree that borders will be decided by negotiations between the parties concerned, and will not necessarily be identical with the pre-1967 cease-fire lines.

Unfortunately, the idea that all of the territory that changed hands in 1967 is 'Palestinian land' is constantly repeated in anti-Israel circles and apparently this includes the US State Department.

Jones also seems to think that Israel is a banana republic whose policies can be micromanaged by the US.

Possibly Jones learned his skills as an assistant to Paul Bremer in the Coalition Provisional Authority, where many of the decisions were taken that resulted in the unhappy situation of the US today in Iraq. Or, when as Ambassador to Kuwait, he was alleged to have intervened on behalf of a Kuwaiti gasoline supplier which overcharged the US military $61 million.

I can agree with Jones on one point: sometimes people do have to move. Take, for example, the US embassy in Tel Aviv.

Saudi marries off his daughter, 15, to a murderer :: Elder of Ziyon

Read this article on the community site

An unbelievably sick story out of Saudi Arabia, reported impassively by Arab News:

RIYADH, 18 March 2008 — Muhammad Al-Zahrani, a convicted murderer, was executed at the end of February in Taif. Al-Zahrani's execution, which was postponed for four years, took place after the victims' family refused to pardon him.

However, what makes Al-Zahrani's case interesting is that the convicted murderer had married his daughter to another convicted murderer on death row in the same prison, Awad Al-Harbi.

The newly married groom now lives in the hope that he may be saved by the generosity of his victim's family.

Reaction in society to the prison marriage was mixed. Some saw the father's decision as a good thing, a way to give a friend and fellow prisoner a second chance in life. Others condemned the step and described it as being unfair to one's daughter.

The marriage fulfills all legal conditions under Saudi law, according to Sheikh Abdul Mohsen Al-Obaikan, a member of the Council of Senior Scholars.

Al-Obaikan said should a woman accept a man on death row after knowing about his situation there is no reason why the marriage should be stopped from happening. When Arab News questioned Al-Obaikan on the girl's sound judgment considering she is only 15, he said she is considered an adult and therefore eligible to marry.

Al-Obaikan said that a woman could get married and see her husband die soon after, which would be God's will, and in Al-Awad's case it would also be God's will to keep him alive should the victim's family pardons him.

As for the idea of marriage in Islam being a form of asylum and haven, and whether this condition applies while one of the spouses is in captivity, Al-Obaikan said that if it is a woman's choice then no one should object.

Ahmad Al-Hariri, a Ph.D. in forensic psychology, said, "In other countries, a 15-year-old is considered a child and cannot be considered an adult until she turns 18."

He added that even if such a marriage is legal then it is still considered an assault on her humanity and wellbeing.

Al-Hariri said this could not be accepted both socially and psychologically. "After choosing a suitable spouse, starting a family and having children are the natural outcome of marriage and in this case there is no guarantee for such a family to exist and thrive," said Al-Hariri.

"The overwhelming possibility of the success of this marriage is bleak, and what we see for the future is a widow with orphans," he added.

"Even if this marriage is legal, it is totally unacceptable on a humanitarian level as it will harm the girl's interests. Should the Reconciliation Committee's efforts fail she will loose a husband after having lost her father," Al-Hariri said.

Even the liberal Saudi expert who is against the marriage doesn't state the obvious - that it is the worst form of child abuse to force your daughter to marry a convicted murderer! And yet, according to Sharia, this is perfectly acceptable.

The New York Times Magazine last Sunday had a lengthy article by Noah Feldman that talks about sharia and how it really isn't so bad, how the West isn't looking at it with enough nuance and how much better it was than English common law - in the 18th century. Perhaps he can defend this action better than the Arab News managed to.
